Your Donation Saves Lives!
We count on your donations to continue our life-saving work. As a non-profit organization with no paid staff members, our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly on behalf of local animals. And our efforts are paying off. Our innovative programs have been credited with reducing the number of animals who are euthanized at our local animal control facility. Our dream is that one day, no adoptable animals will be killed in area shelters. We thank you for helping us realize this dream.Visit the donation page to see where your money goes.

About Ruby (Slippers)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Cat
UPDATE ON RUBY:

Ruby (Slippers) has now settled into being a substitute bookstore cat.  Unfortunately she has usurped the position from Atticus, the original bookstore cat and needless to say, he isn't happy about it.  Alas, Atticus can not return to his cushion, his sofa, his throne, until Princess Ruby finds her furever home.

The size of her family won't matter.  However, it seems that she will be truly happy in a quiet setting, probably where adults only will worship her and attend to her every need.  At least that's what she's experiencing in the bookstore, thanks to the watchful eyes of her attendants there.  It took a while for Ruby to begin trusting humans after she was rescued from the outdoors.  When she was checked by the vet, her age was assessed at approximately 5 years, and she has been brought up to date with all of her shots and as proved by her tipped ear, she has been spayed.

Most days you can find Ruby reclining on what she perceives to be her very own sofa in the bookstore.  On her less ladylike days you will find her sprawled out in the same spot.   The more time you spend with her, the more likely she is to slowly inch over to you, lean against you, and finally end up in your lap!  She is definitely a lap cat, something we never expected when she first came to us.  She has made a remarkable transition from a shy, reticent kitty hiding in the back room to an inquisitive, somewhat friendly cat who now walks through the store, investigating all the aromas, boxes and customers entering daily.

Ruby has a very loud purr and given the time and the right person, she loves to curl up in a welcoming lap and fall asleep.  The only caveat on Ruby, and apparently torbies are known for this, is that sometimes, for no apparent reason, when Princess Ruby no longer desires your attention, she might turn on you with a swat of her claw, a rearing of her jaw, or a somewhat fearsome growl.  One bookstore customer described her well after experiencing this sudden transformation, by calling Ruby "sassy!''

So please come to visit Ruby at Books With a Past at 2465 Route 97, Glenwood, MD.  (410-489-2705)  or always4tucker@yahoo.com. She will most likely be waiting for you on the very comfortable sofa she has declared her own.
