Your Donation Saves Lives!
We count on your donations to continue our life-saving work. As a non-profit organization with no paid staff members, our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly on behalf of local animals. And our efforts are paying off. Our innovative programs have been credited with reducing the number of animals who are euthanized at our local animal control facility. Our dream is that one day, no adoptable animals will be killed in area shelters. We thank you for helping us realize this dream.Visit the donation page to see where your money goes.

About Mandy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
Mandy is in a foster home in our rescue program. Please don't call the shelter, use the contact info above or below.

Mandy is a 5 month old Aussie, Border Collie, Flat-coated Retriever, or similar mix. In her foster home, Mandy is sweet, affectionate, and responsive. She does well with the other 4 dogs, and a cat. Mandy has a very, very sad story.

As a tiny puppy, she was living on a very short chain with no shelter, food, or water. Animal control officers responded to this complaint, then to another, a few weeks later. This time, neighbors had witnessed poor Mandy being beaten, and kicked. She was taken into protective custody, with a severely broken leg. The veterinarian who saw her put a splint on her leg, but thought it would not heal without surgery from a specialist.

We took Mandy into our program, and took her to an orthopedic surgeon. After weeks in a cast, it seems Mandy got a much deserved miracle. Her fracture has healed perfectly, which no one could have imagined. She will need to wear a brace on her wrist for a while at least. Her wrist has too much movement in it, which is consistent with a fall from a high place, or with being thrown.

Mandy is doing great physically, but the emotional scars she has from being chained, hit, kicked, and thrown sometimes show in the way she approaches the world outside her foster home.

When she goes out in public, she can be reactive on a leash, like many dogs. And for a dog who spent her babyhood on a chain trying to protect herself from people or other animals, it is not surprising being on a leash feels scary to her.

Her Foster Mom reports she is making good progress. She is housetrained, with a petsitter to let her out mid-day. She already has a morning signal for "I need to go out" when she comes over to the bed and cries. She knows "sit", "down" , "paw", "look", "stay" (briefly), and "speak".

All this in only a few short weeks! Mandy is clearly an extremely smart girl. She has the focus you would expect from her breed mix, and loves the act of learning. She is a high-energy pup, so will need a fenced yard and someone who enjoys physical activity.

Her Foster Mom says "Mandy has an amazing spirit". Indeed, she must have, or she would never had made it through the trauma she endured as a baby puppy.

Now that her leg healed so well, Mandy needs one more miracle. The one of a loving home with people who are patient and willing to understand her history. And give her the future she deserves.
